Will One Cigarette Harm Me?

My mother told me, "Try everything once". She was trying to get me to eat my greens but in this case she was wrong, some things are not worth messing with. Sorry mum.

Cigarettes (even one) Contain 4000 different poisonous chemicals including cyanide and carbon monoxide. It is less dangerous to inhale an exhaust pipe.

They also make us stink and give us bad breath. They speed our heart up, make us struggle to breathe ('specially if we have asthma) and make our hands shake. Not a good look.

So why do people do it? Well, it's not because they think it makes them look cool. Ciggies contain one of the most addictive substances known to man: nicotine. And it is very hard to stop. So we find ourselves (despite being smart) paying over a fiver a time for a packet of poison. Daft, really.

Back to you. Is one cigarette enough to...
1 Get us addicted? Make us crave another one? Possibly. So be strong.
2 Make us feel ill? Definitely. Every time.
3 Cause permanent damage? Nope. Probably not. The truth is, it usually takes a few years for the evil weed to cause irreversible harm.

So brush your teeth, pop in a breath freshener, change your clothes and have a hot drink. You are officially an ex-smoker.

And if your chest still feels dodgy - see your GP for a check up. Just to be sure.

All the best.
